Is your office all white or all right?
Many modern office spaces have gone for the all-white paint look. It’s clean, fresh, bright, reflects light and looks great in photos, so that’s good right? Well, maybe not …
As humans we spend 90% of our lives in buildings, which means our health and well-being is influenced significantly by the built environment. In a typical office environment in the UK, it is estimated that approximately 60% of staff don’t have sufficient daylight.
Millions of working days are lost each year to sickness absence. This costs the UK economy and businesses like yours, £100 billion per year.
Not only are all white office environments less productive but do not meet the Equalities Act guidance for design in public spaces. The practice of painting walls, doors and trim all white is actively discouraged as it is un-helpful for those with visual impairments who find it difficult to understand the scale and proportions of the space.
The reality of an office space that is painted all-white is that:-
Whilst it may look clean and fresh in photos we all know that white walls get very dirty, very quickly which can make the space look tired and scruffy in the flesh which is not good if you have clients visiting.
In bright sunlight, white walls reflect a lot of light and can cause glare that induces headaches or sore eyes.
In poor light, the white walls can look dull and can even induce feelings of sadness and depression.
Research has shown that adding colour into work and learning environments can sharpen focus and increase productivity by up to 25%.
Above are just a few reasons why an office environment that is painted all-white, is probably not as good an idea as it first seems. So is it time to re-think your office colour scheme?
